In the middle of nowhere, planted in the desert as if by magic, was the Big Apple. It WAS an amazing apple, yes; but above all, it was very big.
En medio de la nada, plantada en el desierto como por arte de magia, estaba la gran manzana. Muy manzana, sí, pero sobre todo muy grande.
Imagine it – it was as tall as a house! It had a blue door and two windows. Its skin, reddish in color, glowed when the sun shone on it.
Imagínatela: era tan alta como una casa. Tenía una puerta azul y dos ventanas. Su piel, de color rojizo, resplandecía cuando el Sol la iluminaba.
This strange and big apple was so far off the normal path that, for a long time, no one knew about it, until a Bedouin traveler, riding his camel, saw it in the distance.
Esta extraña y gran manzana estaba tan alejada de todo camino que durante mucho tiempo nadie supo de ella, hasta que un viajero beduino, montado en su camello, la vio a lo lejos.
It was so hot outside, and the Bedouin was sweltering so much, that he assumed it was a hallucination.
Hacía tanto calor y el beduino estaba tan sofocado, que dio por hecho que se trataba de una alucinación.
“How treacherous is the desert! How it tricks the senses! My eyes are lying. I will continue on my way.”
-¡Qué traicionero es el desierto! ¡Cómo engaña a los sentidos! Mis ojos mienten. Seguiré mi camino.
The Bedouin passed by at a distance and did not approach the Apple.
El beduino pasó de largo y no se acercó a la manzana.
Some time later a merchant carrying spices came across it. He was curious and thought about knocking on the door, but he was afraid:
Tiempo después se topó con ella un mercader que transportaba especias. Sintió curiosidad y pensó en llamar a la puerta, pero tuvo miedo:
“Who is living inside? I think it might be a sorcerer and perhaps he will get mad if I bother him.”

The merchant turned around and left the way he had come.
El mercader dio media vuelta, y se fue por donde había venido.
Finally, a young adventuress who was crossing the desert in a hot-air balloon saw the Big Apple from the sky. She was very brave and used to having adventures traveling from one place to another.
Finalmente, una joven aventurera que cruzaba el desierto en globo vio desde el cielo la gran manzana. Ella era muy valiente y estaba acostumbrada a vivir aventuras viajando de un lugar a otro.
She descended in the balloon and knocked on the door. No one answered. Curious, she opened the door and stepped inside.
Hizo descender el globo y llamó a la puerta. Nadie respondió. Intrigada, la abrió y pasó al interior.
Inside the Big Apple was a bed, a chair and a table. On the table were pitchers of water, tea and lemonade, as well as pasta dishes, fruit, salads and delicious cakes.
Dentro de la gran manzana había una cama, una silla y una mesa. Sobre la mesa jarras de agua, té y limonada. También platos de pasta, frutas, ensaladas y riquísimos pasteles.
The young woman took the opportunity to drink and eat, and she soon realized that no matter how much she drank and ate those delicacies, they never ran out. They reappeared in the pitchers and on the plates, which always remained full.
La joven aprovechó para beber y comer, y pronto se dio cuenta de que por mucho que bebiese y comiese aquellos manjares no se acababan nunca. Volvían a aparecer en las jarras y en los platos, que siempre permanecían llenos.
“Unbelievable! What a place! I’m going to live in the Big Apple!” exclaimed the young woman.
-¡Qué pasada! ¡Qué lugar! ¡Me quedo a vivir en la gran manzana! -exclamó la joven.
Days, months and years went by. The young woman was happy, and she had many adventures, traveling with her beautiful balloon to far away places. After each trip she returned to her house, the Big Apple.
Pasaron los días, los meses y los años. La joven fue feliz y vivió muchas aventuras, viajando con su hermoso globo hasta lugares muy lejanos. Tras cada viaje regresaba a su casa, a la gran manzana.
The young woman was no longer young; she became old. Her skin became wrinkled and so did the apple’s. One mild summer night the old woman died in her bed, inside the Big Apple. That same night, already parched, the Apple also died.
La joven dejó de ser joven; se hizo anciana. Su piel se arrugó y también la de la manzana. Una suave noche de verano la anciana murió en su cama, dentro de la gran manzana. Esa misma noche, ya reseca, también murió la manzana.
The desert mourned its loss with an unusual storm. It rained as much as in the jungle, and a strong wind covered everything with sand.
El desierto lloró su pérdida con una inusual tormenta. Llovió tanto como en la selva y un fuerte viento las cubrió de arena.
Inside the Apple, the water made a seed germinate – a seed that grew bright, young and strong in the middle of the desert.
Dentro de la manzana el agua hizo germinar una semilla. Una semilla que creció brillante, joven y fuerte en medio del desierto.
It is already as tall as a house, it has a blue door and two windows. It is waiting for someone brave to see it, open the door and step inside.
Ya es tan alta como una casa, tiene una puerta azul y dos ventanas. Está esperando que alguien valiente la vea, abra la puerta y pase dentro.
